Catch up on (1) the keynote with John Vary, former in-house futurist at John Lewis & Partners, as well as the two Rotageek customer panel conversations (2) with Screwfix, The White Company and Pets at Home and (3) Fortnum & Mason.

In September 2026, Rotageek hosted The Shift 2026, our flagship event for workforce management leaders, held at Fortnum & Mason's iconic Piccadilly store. Retail leaders from Pets at Home, Screwfix and The White Company joined us for a candid customer panel exploring the myths and realities of building schedules that actually work, while our hosts at Fortnum & Mason shared their own journey of moving from tradition to transformation.
This year's event brought together workforce leaders from across retail to explore how demand, judgement and automation are shaping the way businesses build schedules, plan ahead and support their people (with a stop for afternoon tea along the way, of course).
The afternoon opened with a keynote from John Vary, former in-house futurologist for John Lewis & Partners, who challenged the room to think beyond predicting the future and focus instead on the decisions being made today, the ones that will define what work looks like in five years' time.
Then, the panel dug into five myths that persist across the industry, from the belief that one system can solve every workforce challenge, to the assumption that better scheduling always means fewer hours. Rotageek customers from Pets at Home, Screwfix and The White Company, who all featured on the panel, were candid about what worked, what didn't, and what they wished someone had told them before they started.
During the customer panel, speakers shared honest, real-world stories around:
Why broad, one-size-fits-all platforms often create generic results, and what it takes to build a system around your specific workforce
The gap between an accurate forecast and a trusted one, and why closing it is a change management story as much as a technical one
Why go-live is just the beginning of the journey - and why the businesses that invest in that first chapter see it pay off fastest
The commercial gains that matter most aren't always the ones in the original business case, from manager confidence to reduced attrition
Fortnum & Mason's Sean and James also shared their own transformation story: moving from disjointed, inconsistent spreadsheets across every store to a single, harmonised way of working. They spoke openly about the hardest parts of the change, the importance of listening to feedback from the shop floor, and why giving their teams the tools to plan their lives has been central to protecting the culture of a 318-year-old brand.
Throughout the day, one theme kept surfacing: the businesses getting the most from workforce management aren't the ones chasing efficiency alone. They're the ones putting people at the centre of every decision, listening to their teams, building trust in the systems they introduce, and treating every rota, every rule and every piece of automation as a decision about the kind of work they believe people deserve.
These conversations revealed how leading retailers are defining the next era of workforce management, not by reacting faster, but by deciding, deliberately, what brilliant work looks like.
The future of your workforce is closer than you think.
The forces reshaping how people live, work and shop are moving faster than ever. For workforce leaders, the challenge isn't just theorising about what’s next it’s translating these shifts into real-world strategies that work on the ground today, not just on paper.
This session cuts through the noise to explore where the frontline workforce is genuinely heading. We look at what decisions made today will look smart in 2030 and which ones will look like missed opportunities.
The real story of workforce management is told by the people living it.
Five myths. Three retailers. One honest conversation.
Hear from a panel of senior workforce leaders from across UK retail, as they share what scheduling actually looks and feels like from the inside. From the decisions that made the difference, the moments that surprised them, and the gains that never showed up in the original business case.
It's one you'll likely resonate with, going through the same motion and WFM journey as these Rotageek customers.
The challenge at the heart of modern workforce planning is timeless: getting the right person, in the right place, at the right moment.
Even organisations built on centuries of tradition eventually hit a tipping point where the traditional way of managing people no longer holds up. Growth demands a shift - from relying on "how things have always been done" to actively modernising workforce operations for the future.
This session explores that exact pivot point. Hear what it takes to recognise that a legacy approach has reached its limit and what it actually takes to make modern workforce transformation stick.
